Gerald "Jerry" R. McCalley

INDEPENDENCE – Gerald “Jerry” R. McCalley, 85, of Independence, Iowa, died Monday June 3, 2019, at St. MercyOne – Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 10, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Paul McManus officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, at the Reiff Family Center’s Funeral Home in Independence where a parish vigil service will be held at 6 p.m.

Jerry was born on March 26, 1934, at his family home in Independence, the son of Durward A. and Josephine (Knudson) McCalley. He graduated from Independence High School in 1952 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving until his discharge on November 7, 1956. He returned to Independence and was married to Joan M Schmitt on July 13, 1957. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids, where Jerry attended Coe College; he later transferred to the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. He taught at the Mental Health Institute in Independence. Jerry moved to Minonk, Ill., and was employed with the Minonk State Bank. In 1968, the family moved to Hanover, Ill., where he became president of Hanover Bank. In 1976, he returned to Independence and joined with Security Sate Bank, rising to the position of vice president.

Jerry was a member and former Grand Knight of the St. Pius 10th Knights of Columbus, the St. John’s Parish Financial Board, and several breakfast clubs.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 62 years Joan M. McCalley; three children, Kevin (Melanie) McCalley, Riverside, Calif., Staci (Jeff) Holden, Pierre, S.D., and Chris (Maria) McCalley, Illinois City, Ill; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley (Jack) Russell, Little Falls, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Durward and Josephine McCalley.
