Common Grounds

Darrin Crow, Storyteller at Falcon Center

INDEPENDENCE – There is a Universe of Stories out there, and storyteller, talespinner, and troubadour Darrin Crow is blasting off to bring them to you. Join the Independence Public Library as we welcome him at 9:30 a.m. on June 12 at the Falcon Civic Center. He will feature tales of the sun and moon, constellations, people who reached for the stars, and “Jack vs. the Outer Space Giants!” He will keep you on the edge of your seat with out of this world stories. IPL Closing Early

INDEPENDENCE – The Independence Public Library will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, for Staff Development. Regular hours will resume Thursday.

Catholic Daughters

INDEPENDENCE – The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court 495, St. John Church, Independence, and St. Patrick’s, Winthrop, will close out their year with Mass, induction, and reception of new members at St. John on Wednesday, June 12, at 6 p.m. There will be a light lunch served in the church parlors followed by a program about the Iowa State Convention and meeting.

Women’s Connection

INDEPENDENCE – Women’s Connection affiliated with Stonecroft will be presenting their monthly meal and program on Thursday, June 13, at 9:30 a.m. at the Independence Senior Center. A brunch will be served. Admission is $10. The special feature will be honey bees by Victor Collins. Our speaker will be Joyce Poggensee from Harlan, Iowa. She will be doing a presentation titled “Would You Like Fries With That?” From menus to critical life choices: finding contentment with decisions you make in life. We are not a club. Stories in Space at Wilson Art Thru Photography

INDEPENDENCE – The Independence Public Library Thursday morning programs with Vonnie will be held at Wilson Art Thru Photography this week. Children ages 0-5 and their caregiver are welcome to meet there for a similar format of Rhyme Time, Movin’ & Groovin’, and Story Time –all beginning at 9:30 a.m. Children will have an opportunity to explore Gary Wilson’s professional photography studio and get their picture taken. Whispering Butterfly Release

INDEPENDENCE – Reiff Family Center is hosting a Whispering Butterfly Release at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 at Teacher’s Park. Come and release a butterfly in memory of a loved one. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Celebrating National Flag Day

INDEPENDENCE – The Capt. D.S. Lee Mansion will hold an Open House / fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 14 in honor of National Flag Day. Dungeons & Dragons

INDEPENDENCE – This legendary, fantastical role-playing game is centered on storytelling in worlds of swords and sorcery. Teens ages 12-17 work together and may explore a dark dungeon, a ruined castle, or a lava-filled cavern. The adventurers will need to solve puzzles, escape traps, combat monsters and build friendships to overcome the challenges. The program is from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Snacks will be provided. Strawberry Moon Evening

QUASQUETON – Unwind with refreshments as you meander the grounds and enjoy live music and at the house and council fire. Independence Area Community Theater (IACT, formerly RATS) will be performing skits and improv. The event is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

INDEPENDENCE – Do you have great ideas? What programs and materials would you like to see for teens at the library? The Independence Public Library Teen Advisory Board (iTAB) is having open meetings this summer for teens in grades 7-12.
