OELWEIN – A benefit for Burr and Connie (Schmitz) Ekstrand, both injured in a motorcycle accident June 12, will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2102 S. Frederick in Oelwein.
Dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be a DJ playing from 7 to 11 p.m. and a silent auction from 4 to 11 p.m.
The Ekstrands are longtime Oelwein/Hazelton area residents. Burr works at Rydell Chevrolet in Waterloo and Connie works at Covenant’s Mercy Hospital in Oelwein.
On June 12, while vacationing in Texas on their Harley, they were involved in a serious accident.
Burr suffered several broken bones, a concussion, several stitches and severe “roadrash.”
Burr was released after spending three days in the hospital. He remained by Connie’s side in Texas.
Connie’s injuries were mostly sustained to her head. Along with a fractured skull, there were four spots of bleeding on her brain, which also caused swelling. She also suffered numerous stitches and multiple spots of “roadrash.” She spent the first week and a half in a coma on life support in an Amarillo Hospital. She awoke on June 21. She was transferred by air ambulance to Covenant Rehabilitation Center in Waterloo on June 26 where she remains today. (This flight was not covered by insurance, nor was Burr’s three-day hospital stay.)
Since then she has been fighting pneumonia and several infections while also trying to start rehabilitation.
Relatives say the healing process for Connie is going to take months and months of hard work as an inpatient in a rehabilitation center type setting.
All proceeds will go towards Connie and Burr’s medical expenses. Matching Funds By: Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Donations can be made at any Veridian Credit Union location (BE Ekstrand: Member #7273890).
