INDEPENDENCE – It was a gorgeous day for the Independence Farmer’s Market last Saturday. It marked the first Second Saturday Series musical event. Sponsored by LACES (“Promoting the Arts to Enrich Life”), every month on the second Saturday there will be a different group playing at the market. The first group were The Great Bluegrass Herons from the Kalona area. The two-couple group has been playing together for at least 20 years. The next Second Saturday musician will be Adam Griffin from the Manchester area. Griffin will be playing Country/American favorites.

The good weather brought out several vendors and shoppers. Rhubarb and Asparagus are still coming on strong. Joe Olsen was using fresh asparagus from local vendors to make a light asparagus salad by sautéing it in butter and seasoning with a little garlic. Market Manager Sarah Kielly then passed out samples.

Coming up next week at the Market will be “Service Club Day.” Among the participants will be the Independence Lions and Friends of Cedar Rock will be on hand to talk about their organizations. For your entertainment, the Smith Family Bluegrass Band will be performing. The very musically talented family has performed at Under the Oaks and other venues.
