MAQUOKETA – The Independence varsity baseball team split their road doubleheader against Maquoketa on Monday.

Maquoketa won the first game 2-0 and Independence won the second game 6-5.

In the first game, the Mustangs combined for four hits, a walk and no runs. Third baseman Korver Hupke had two hits and a stolen base in the contest.

Junior Logan Schmitt started the first game for Independence and went six innings with 10 strikeouts; while allowing three hits, three walks and one earned run.

In the second game, Independence combined for 10 hits, two walks and six runs. Hupke had four hits, two doubles and four RBIs. Logan Schmitt and Keegan Schmitt each had two hits and two runs scored.

Hupke started the second game and went 4.2 innings with three strikeouts; while allowing six hits, four walks and three earned runs. Josh Struve pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief with three strikeouts; while allowing two hits, no walks and one earned run.

Independence is now 4-11 after Monday’s split with Maquoketa.
