The East Buchanan varsity softball has nearly matched their victory total from last season with head coach Marcy Fox entering her second season at the helm.

East Buchanan is going with a starting lineup of center fielder Lauren Donlea, left fielder Kyara Pals, right fielder Lacy Anderegg, second baseman/pitcher Lara Fox, first baseman/pitcher Emma Cook, pitcher/second baseman Nicole Pettinger, shortstop Olivia Donlea, catcher Lakyn Beyer and third baseman Katie Gee this season.

Although this has been East Buchanan’s primary starting lineup, it is not set in stone as their play will dictate playing time.

“The positions are always up for grabs,” Marcy Fox said. “They need to work hard and continue to fight for the starting positions.”

With Fox entering her second season as the Buccaneers head coach, she is joined by a new assistant this year, Deb Donlea.

During practice, East Buchanan has been working to improve their offense and defense.

“We try to touch on both defense and offense at each practice,” Marcy Fox said. “However, with the overlapping of [spring] sports, it’s been difficult to cover everything.”

Coach Fox identified Gee, Pettinger, Olivia Donlea and Beyer as her team’s leaders this season.

“Our weakness is our numbers,” Marcy Fox said. “I think everyone may be dealing with the same issue. Our strengths are that with a small school, you are family. Our team looks out for each other. Great camaraderie.”

East Buchanan has been relying on two pitchers so far this season, Fox (7-2, 2.87 ERA) and Pettinger (0-2, 7.00 ERA). They may also use Cook at times on the mound this year.

So far this season, East Buchanan has five .300 hitters, with Lauren Donlea, Cook, Olivia Donlea, Lara Fox and Pettinger reaching that plateau.

Coach Fox said she looks forward to each game her team plays and thinks they are all important.

“We look at every game on our schedule as a challenge and opportunity to show off our skills,” Marcy Fox said.
