Oelwein girls end season in Class 3A regional tournament play
WAUKON — The girls’ basketball season wrapped up for the Oelwein Huskies with Saturday’s 67-41 Class 3A regional tournament loss to the Waukon Indians.
Waukon raced out to an 11-6 lead at the end of the opening period. The Indians built a 34-16 halftime edge and widened the margin to 48-26 at the conclusion of the third stanza.
Oelwein bowling teams lose decisions to the Waukon Indians
The home bowling season came to an end for the Oelwein Huskies with Friday’s losses to the Waukon Indians at Viper Lanes.
The Waukon girls handed Oelwein a 2024-1486 setback.
Brielle Belden had the high series for Oelwein with a 290 (games of 127 and 163). Shalymar Evens was next with a 256 (142 and 114), followed by Jazmin Troxell 236 and Misty Lillibridge 227 (130 and 97).
Leading the way for Waukon was Megan O’Neill with a 308 (155 and 153).
Waukon emerged with a 2665-2410 triumph over the Oelwein boys.
Devon Pint had a 381 series for Oelwein (188 and 193), followed by Jestin Espe 359 (176 and 183), Tyler Hosto 322 (143 and 179), Collin Ricchio 303 (146 and 157), Austin Wilkes 257 (116 and 141) and Noah Gross 210 (82 and 128).
Noah Schlellsmidt paced the Indians with a 398(212 and 186).
Wapsie Valley girls collect victory over the Denver Cyclones
DENVER — The Wapsie Valley Warrior girls earned a 51-45 Class 2A girls’ regional basketball tournament win over the Denver Cyclones Saturday.
Kaci Beesecker and Erin Riordan spearheaded the Wapsie Valley offensive attack with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
Beesecker also collected seven rebounds and four assists, while Riordan (8 for 13 from the field) completed a double-double by hauling down 11 rebounds.
Mikenna Joerger finished with four points and 10 rebounds for the winners, while Melody Kayser and Anne Richards concluded the scoring for the Warriors with three points each.
Turkey Valley Trojans notch a victory over West Central Blue Devils
JACKSON JUNCTION — The girls’ basketball campaign came to an end for the West Central Blue Devils with Saturday’s 73-45 Class 1A regional tournament loss to the Turkey Valley Trojans.
Turkey Valley had leads of 24-7, 42-18 and 57-31 at each of the quarter breaks.
Central Elkader eliminates Starmont from regional competition
ELKADER— The Central Elkader Warriors put an end to the girls’ basketball season for the Starmont Stars with Friday’s 59-52 Class 1A regional decision.
The Warriors jumped out to a 19-9 lead at the end of the opening frame and were never headed. They were up 40-27 at the half and 47-37 at the conclusion of the third stanza.
North Fayette Valley defeats Anamosa in Class 3A regional contest
WEST UNION — Keyed by a good first quarter, the North Fayette Valley TigerHawk girls downed the Anamosa Blue Raiders, 42-37, in Saturday’s Class 3A regional basketball contest.
North Fayette Valley built a 10-7 lead at the end of the opening frame. The TigerHawks led 19-15 at halftime and 31-26 at the conclusion of the third frame.
Emma Ney finished as the leading scorer for the winners with 10 points. Kenlin Schmitt was next with nine points, followed by Makenna Koch eight, Alyssa Bohr six, Abby Reichter five and Gina Gibson four.
Sumner-Fredericksburg cagers drop contests to Aplington-Parkersburg
SUMNER — The Sumner-Fredericksburg Cougars lost a North Iowa Cedar League Eastern Division basketball doubleheader to the Aplington-Parkersburg Falcons Saturday.
Aplington-Parkersburg won the girls’ clash, 48-36.
Megan Niewoehner was the leading scorer for the Cougars with nine points, followed by Cassidy Pagel eight, Jenna Pagel seven, Kylee Jordon five, Mariah Schult three, Ivy Hirsch two and Abby Meyer two.
The Aplington-Parkersburg boys turned back Sumner-Fredericksburg, 56-23.
Spencer Schmitz finished with 10 points for the Cougars, followed by Kody VanEngelenburg six, Blayze Quigley five and Kelby Olson two.
East Buchanan girls capture Class 2A regional basketball decision
ALBURNETT — Led by the solid performance of Erica Hoffman, the East Buchanan Buccaneer girls rolled to a 49-25 Class 2A regional basketball win over the Alburnett Pirates Saturday.
The Buccaneers opened up a 16-4 lead at the end of the opening quarter. They led 24-14 at the half and 41-16 at the conclusion of the third period.
Hoffman hit 8 of 15 field goals on the way to finishing with 18 points. She also finished with seven rebounds.
Olivia Donlea added nine points, for East Buchanan, followed by Nicole Pettinger seven, Lauren Donlea six, Kyara Pals five, Lara Fox three and Hayley Hamilton one.
