OELWEIN — The Oelwein Lions Club is celebrating its 75th year in the community this year. Since its formation, Lions have been associated with sight-saving, from their White Cane Days to eyeglass collections, to the preschool eye screening programs, and sponsoring guide dogs for the blind.

In celebration of 75 years in Oelwein, the Lions are sponsoring a special event Sunday, May 18, at the Oelwein Veterans Sports Complex. The Iowa Reapers, the only blind baseball team in the state, will be in Oelwein Sunday to play an exhibition Charity Beep Baseball event. This event will help prepare the Reapers for competition at the 2014 Beep Baseball World Series held in Rochester, Minn., Aug. 3-10.

The Iowa Reapers will play an adapted version of America’s favorite pastime. Challengers will be softball teammates from The Kokomo taking the field at 10 a.m. Sunday. A second game will commence at 1 p.m. and is slated to feature local “celebrities.”
