Oakdale Cemetery walk

The low hanging trees seem to add just the right amount of ambience to this part of Oakdale Cemetery in Oelwein to make it a seemingly perfect place for a stop on “Stroll with the Spirits” tour, Friday, Sept. 12, sponsored by the Oelwein Public Library.

OELWEIN - Oelwein Library Director Susan Macken is inviting the public to come “Stroll with the Spirits” at Oakdale Cemetery located at 4th Street Southwest, on Friday, Sept. 12, from 6 - 8 p.m.

Macken said attendees will hear costumed historical interpreters share the stories about “the fascinating lives of our city’s pioneers.” “This year, I was shocked to discover one of the people we will be talking about is one of Iowa’s unsolved murder cases,” said the Library Director. “The scene of the crime took place on a farm north of Oelwein in 1933.”

Other stories will include striking it rich in the Gold Rush, poisonings, railroad accidents, soldiers, and a former slave.

The free will donations collected will be used to fund the upcoming Oelwein Public Library program, “Iowa Haunted Places” on Oct. 1. The Friends of the Library will be serving cider and cookies.
