OELWEIN - As Paul Harvey would say, “And now you know the rest of the story,” or at least a little of it.
The story we’re talking about is the unsolved murder of Ashley Downing, an Oelwein area farmer, on Jan. 4, 1933.
Downing’s murder will be one of the stories told during the Oelwein Library’s “Stroll with the Spirits” at the Oakdale Cemetery, Friday, Sept. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Downing, 77, was shot in the head with a shotgun at his home, and then robbed. Newspaper reports said his pocketbook was missing, but no amount of money was ever reported.
The person who did the crime was never caught.
