MAQUOKETA – The Independence varsity softball team swept Maquoketa in both games of their road doubleheader on Monday.

Independence won the first game 3-0 and the second game 18-4 in five innings.

The Mustangs combined for nine hits, a walk and three runs in the first game. First baseman Allie Jo Zieser had two hits, a double, a run scored and an RBI. Catcher Kenzie Fischels had two hits, a run scored, a double and an RBI.

Senior Mackenzie Hupke (10-3) started the first game for Independence and went a full seven innings with 12 strikeouts; while allowing only two hits, a walk and no runs.

In the second game, Independence combined for 22 hits, a walk and 18 runs scored. Shortstop Abby Davis had three hits, two runs scored, a triple and two RBIs. Third baseman Mary Puffett had four hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Second baseman Brooke Beatty had two hits, a walk, three runs scored and three RBIs.

Senior Megan Brock (4-4) started the second game for the Mustangs and went five innings with no strikeouts; while allowing two hits, a walk and two earned runs. Two runs were unearned.

Independence is now 14-7 for the season. Up next is a home doubleheader against West Delaware on Wednesday.
