INDEPENDENCE – The Independence varsity softball team defeated West Delaware in both ends of their home doubleheader on Wednesday.

Independence won the first game 1-0 in 14 innings and the second game 10-4. The Mustangs won the first game with a sacrifice RBI from third baseman Mary Puffett that scored first baseman Allie Jo Zieser in the 14th inning.

The Mustangs combined for nine hits, two walks and one run in the first contest. Shortstop Abby Davis had three hits and Zieser had two hits, a run and a stolen base.

Independence pitcher Mackenzie Hupke (11-3) pitched all 14 innings of the first game and had 15 strikeouts. She limited West Delaware to five hits, a walk and no runs.

The Mustangs combined for seven hits, four walks and 10 runs in the second game. Left fielder Sydney Hearn had two hits, a walk and three runs. Hupke had a double, a walk and three RBIs.

Senior Megan Brock (5-4) started the second game for Independence and pitched 5.2 innings with three strikeouts; while allowing five hits, a walk and one earned run. Three of her runs were unearned. Hupke pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief with two strikeouts and no runs allowed.

Independence has a 16-7 record after their two wins on Wednesday.
