INDEPENDENCE — A 22-year-old woman from Hardy, Iowa, died in a collision Tuesday afternoon between a car and a semitrailer on Highway 20.

Bailey N.DeVries was dead at the scene of the crash, according to the Iowa State Patrol report.

Devries was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala east on Highway 20 near Independence when it slid through a median and was struck by a 1995 Freightliner semitrailer traveling west.

Freezing rain had put a light glaze of ice over much of the region on Tuesday.

Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Raymount Towing.

Agencies responding included the State Patrol, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, Independence Fire Department, Buchanan County Ambulance Service and Department of Transportation Enforcement.

As of Wednesday, Feb. 6, the Iowa Department of Transportation has recorded 26 traffic fatalities so far this year, which is about average since 2014.

The total is down eight, however, from this time last year.
