Eleven seconds left: Oelwein’s Gage Voshell breaks out of the standing tie-up by pushing Waverly Shell Rock’s Jentry Staack away. They are tied 1-1 in the third period of their 182-pound bout Thursday night in Oelwein’s gym.
Nine second left: The Go-Hawk steps toward Voshell, who dives at Stack’s right leg. Voshell winds up on his knees with his arms wrapped around Staack’s ankle.
Seven seconds: Voshell rises, with Staack’s thigh locked in his arm.
Six: Staack hops on one foot. Voshell flings him left. He falls toward the Oelwein cheerleaders. He lands on his back.
Five: Voshell loses his grip. They are separated.
Four: Voshell plunges. Wraps up Staack.
Three: The ref signals 2 points for the takedown.
Two: Staack tries to escape.
One: Voshell chops Staack’s arm. The Go-Hawk crashes back to the mat.
It’s over. Voshell pops up and walks to the center of the mat for his arm raising.
Voshell’s 3-1 win was one of only two that Oelwein’s varsity managed to get against the Northeast Iowa Conference-leading Go-Hawks in their dual. The other was at 126. Oelwein’s Carsen Jeanes won an 8-2 decision over Dylan Stockdale.
Waverly won the dual 60-6.
The Go-Hawks are now 6-0 in duals in the conference and 20-5 overall. The Huskies are 1-4 and 7-9.
The varsity dual opened at the 138 weight class, where Waverly’s Zach Barnett pinned Andrew Roete at 1:25.
At 145, Waverly’s Noah Heise won a 6-5 decision over Leighton Patterson on a last-second reversal.
At 152, Waverly’s Evan Yant pinned Austin Perry at 1:24.
At 160, Waverly’s Carter Proffitt pinned Colton Roete at 3:45.
At 170, Waverly’s McCrae Hagarty pinned Owen Rechkemmer at 1:24.
At 220, Waverly’s Jacob
Wilson won a 10-3 decision over Cooper Smock.
At 285, Waverly’s Brayden Wolf pinned Riley McKeeman at 1:28.
At 120, Waverly’s Bailey Roybal pinned Luke Hamilton at 1:16.
At 132, Waverly’s Carter Fecht pinned Solji Gulmamadov at 5:31.
It was Senior Night at Oelwein High School, and senior cheerleaders, wrestlers and managers were recognized before the singing of the national anthem.
The senior cheerleaders are Sydney Gefaller, Brooke Patterson, Olivia Cummings and Natalie Stasi.
The senior wrestlers recognized were Solji Gulmamadov, Luke Hamilton, Andrew Roete, and Riley McKeeman.
The senior managers recognized were Mahayla Harrison, Liz Reinhart and Morgan Vawter
Oelwein will travel to Center Point-Urbana on Saturday for a tournament that begins at 9 a.m.
