A family watching television Thursday afternoon heard a knock on the door and found Vinton Police Officer Josh West at their door. West told them smoke was coming from the top of their house.

Neighbors had noticed smoke coming from the attic area of the two-story house and called 911.

Upon arrival, West was initially told by neighbors no one was in the house, but the family dog was. Dick Bridge, another neighbor, also indicated he believed no one was in the house. The fire was in the attic area and had not broken out into flames. The Vinton Fire Department used the aerial truck to help get water into the attic. More information will be available later.
