A man was killed and a woman was injured when the truck they were in lost control and crashed Sunday night in Sumner.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Larry Goodwin, 75, of Fredericksburg, was driving a 2017 Ford pickup westbound on Iowa Highway 93 around 9:30 p.m. when he crossed the center line and entered the south ditch. The truck traveled some unspecified distance before hitting an embankment located at Lifeline Drive.

The truck then went airborne and later landed in the Dollar General parking lot. It then rolled and came to rest against a light pole. Larry Goodwin was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Meanwhile, his passenger, Audrey Goodwin, 67, also of Fredericksburg, was taken to UnityPoint Health-Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo by Gundersen Lutheran Aircare for her injuries. Her condition is not known. She was wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.

The Iowa State Patrol was also assisted by Sumner police, fire and EMS, along with the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office.
