The parents of one of the kidnapped Evansdale girls will speak at Shell Rock United Methodist Church about the need for specialized training for law enforcement a year after the girls’ bodies were found in Bremer County.

Drew and Heather Collins will appear on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. to talk about how they have coped with the disappearance of their daughter, Elizabeth, 8, and her cousin Lyric Cook, 10, on July 13, 2012, from Myers Lake in Evansdale and their eventual discovery in Seven Bridges Wildlife Area on Dec. 5, 2012.

The Collinses will tell the story to help prevent this tragedy from happening to another family.

Shell Rock UMC is co-sponsoring the free event with Farmers Insurance-Robyn Knapp Agency.

“We want to make sure that we all stay vigilant in the protection of the community and all the kids,” said Robyn Knapp, the event organizer. “We want to make sure that a tragedy like this one is avoided at all cost.”
