Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson says he would rather chase bad guys than fight a virus.

As the chief law enforcement officer of a county with over 130,000  residents and operating a jail of 270 beds, he has shouldered the responsibility of running the county's emergency operation center as the coronavirus cases mount in Iowa.

The sheriff and his wife, Janel Carey, a nurse practitioner, are on the front lines of the fight to contain the virus.

The sheriff has been the sources of several stories and videos I have done with him over the years.

He has also helped provide unique experiences for many of my journalism students.

This unedited interview captures the rawness of the times we live in, as well as the humanity and the trust of the relationship community journalists tend to build with their sources over time.
