A group of area veterans reflected on the meaning of the annual celebration paying tribute to the fallen in times of a global pandemic. Cedar Falls AMVETS Riders joined the Waverly Memorial Day ceremony at the Waverly Area Veterans Post on Monday morning.

During the ceremony, Rich Miller, the emcee, said that along with veterans, this year's event honors frontline workers, who sacrifice daily in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. "They are both elite and ordinary," he said of the frontline heroes. "They are elite in the sense of character. Giving your life so others could live theirs is the ultimate definition of sacrifice."
