NASHUA — It wasn’t close to midnight, but something was lurking on the other side of the net.
Under the bright lights, Wapsie Valley and Lake Mills battled throughout four sets.
With all apologies to the late Michael Jackson, the Class 2A Region 6 final between the unranked Warriors and seventh-ranked Bulldogs was a real thriller on Halloween night at Nashua-Plainfield High School. In a tight match, Wapsie punched its ticket to the state tournament in Cedar Rapids with a 28-26, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21 victory.
However, the Warriors will have to slay the monster among volleyball teams in the state of Iowa, top-ranked and multiple champion Dike-New Hartford. The Wolverines will face Wapsie at 2 p.m. Wednesday on Court 1 in the U.S. Cellular Center.
But that’s for another day. First, it’s time for the Warriors to celebrate this hard-fought victory over the Bulldogs.
