Members of the Waverly Fire Department took donations Thursday afternoon in their annual bootblock to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The firefighters stood along the intersection of West Bremer Avenue and Fourth Street Southwest/Northwest, asking passing motorists to place bills and loose change into some boots that they held.

Fire departments across the country have been supporting the MDA nearly since its inception, according to the late comedian Jerry Lewis, who hosted the annual Labor Day telethon from 1966 to 2014.
