A vehicle accident leading to a downed utility pole near Fareway in Oelwein brought out both the city’s Fire and Police Departments on Tuesday evening.

At approximately 6:27 p.m., Oelwein Police responded to the accident, which occurred in the 100 block of 2nd St. SE. Upon investigation, they determined that a Ford Explorer operated by Brooke Sommerfelt had collided with a parked trailer which subsequently knocked down a utility pole.
The trailer was parked in a work zone at the time of the accident, according to Oelwein Police.
Preliminary estimates placed the damage to the vehicle driven by Sommerfelt at $5,000. Damage to the trailer, meanwhile, was thought to be $500, with an additional $2,000 in damages to the downed utility pole.
No injuries were reported.
In responding, Oelwein Police were assisted by the Oelwein Fire Department.
