Featuring guest speaker, Venus Williams; Tandy also named to All-District golf team
VINTON - Rachel Tandy has been a very solid contributor to the Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf team for the last four years, but there is no doubt she saved the best for last with her fifth place individual finish at the State Tournament just a few weeks ago to cap off a great career.
The golf season is now over and Tandy has shifted her athletic focus to the Vikettes softball team for the summer. However, because of her contributions in 2018 on the links, the awards and achievements just keep on coming.
Late last week, Tandy was named to the Golf/Tennis All Iowa Spring Sports Team by the Des Moines Register alongside just four other female golfers in Class 3A. The achievement not only gives Tandy much deserved recognition for her spectacular senior season, but an invitation to attend the Sports Awards ceremony at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines this Saturday (June 23rd) with celebrity guest speaker and professional tennis icon, Venus Williams.
“The Tandy sisters (Lauren and Rachel) are legacy players for V-S Girls Golf! Rachel finished her senior year in a flourish and going into the State Tournament, she was ranked 13th in 3A individual stats. Finishing in fifth place was a phenomenal achievement,” said Vinton-Shellsburg Head Girls Golf Coach, Janet Woodhouse.
While known for her endless skills on the golf course, Tandy also participated and excelled in many other activities throughout her time wearing the black and gold.
“Besides her golfing achievements, Rachel was also involved in student senate and other sports, including being a varsity softball pitcher. She also participated in the arts via the school musicals and on top of that, she wore the silver cord at graduation, which is an indication of over 100 hours of community service. Rachel is a great example of “the Iowa girl”! I couldn’t find enough superlatives to describe what she and her sister have meant to our program,” added Coach Woodhouse.
In addition to Tandy, Union boys tennis player, sophomore Rhett Peters, was also given an invitation to this exclusive event sponsored by Hy-Vee, Medicom, and Wells Fargo as he was named to the Honorable Mention All Iowa Boys Tennis Team following a fourth place finish at the State Tennis Tournament in Waterloo.
Congratulations to the both of them on their outstanding achievements and expected attendance this weekend in Des Moines! Wrapping up, also congratulations to Tandy on being named to the Class 3A All-District four team alongside five others.
“This is the third consecutive year that Rachel has been named this All-District elite list,” stated Coach Woodhouse.
With their hard work and determination, Tandy and Peters have earned the right to these honors. Now it’s their time to enjoy them.
