Sydney Woods

Sydney Woods signs her letter of intent Thursday afternoon in the CPU High School gym to run track and cross country at Mount Mercy University. Joining Sydney at the table is (L-R): her sister and MMU teammate Allison, her father Mike, and her mother Angi.

CENTER POINT - On Thursday afternoon at the CPU High School gym, a Stormin’ Pointer announced her college intentions post-graduation.

That in particular CPU student was Sydney Woods, who signed her name on the dotted line to be a two-sport athlete in track and cross country for Mount Mercy University.

“Central College was in the running for awhile, but Mount Mercy was always a school that stuck out to me with some of my family going there and with my sister there now. She definitely had a big impact in my decision to go there because I wanted to run with her one more year, but also be close to home, so it was a perfect match,” said Woods.

Next season won’t be the first successful interaction between the Woods’ sisters though as Sydney jumped on the scene as a freshman during Allison’s senior season at CPU.

“I placed top 15 at all the meets, got all-conference (14th place), and made it to state (46th). My favorite memories were running with my sister and experiencing state and then running with AJ (Adrianna Katcher) the other three years of cross country, watching her win all of those state titles,” added Woods.

Since that magical freshman season however, Woods has been met with many challenges like walking pneumonia and injuries at the wrong time, including having to sit out districts this past week. Despite this, she wouldn’t trade her experiences for anything.

“The coaches are a huge part of making sports at CPU enjoyable and they always get us to where we need and want to be. They believe in us and that’s what makes this school great,” commented Woods.

While her senior cross country season did not go as planned with an injury and many meet cancellations, Woods is excited to make up for it during track season.

“My goal is state. I know to get there I will have to work harder than I ever have before and I am ready to do that,”stated Woods.

Woods’ career, just like many other athletes, has faced its ups and downs. However, with great talent and a strong work ethic, Woods is on the right track to finish her time off right with the Stormin’ Pointers. Then it’s one last ride with her sister, Allison, on the horizon in Cedar Rapids at Mount Mercy University.
